ISLANDS is a unique Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Program jointly offered by the University of Groningen, the University of the Aegean, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and the University of Iceland. Tuition fees for students from EU Member States and programme countries is € 4500 per year, and tuition fees for students from non-programme countries is € 9000 per year.
As an ISLANDS student, you will engage with the distinct characteristics of islands, their social, economic, geopolitical, and environmental contexts from the perspective of both spatial, social, and environmental sciences – all while developing tools, skills, and technology to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical sustainable development and planning.
We believe that the best approach to learning about islands and sustainability is through a mix of both excellent, high-level and prestigious educational settings and through in-person real life experiences and examples. Therefore, our students engage in both traditional coursework as well as extensive research training, addressing real-life sustainable challenges on islands.
ISLANDS students shape their own master’s program by selecting an island-based university in addition to Groningen University, and divide their study time between both. This gives you the opportunity to study in a top-100 university in the Netherlands, as well an island universities, either in Greece, Iceland, or Spain, that excels in distinct research areas, providing you with a diverse range of specialisation options. This also means that at successful completion, you will earn a Master of Science double degree.
